St Nicholas Church

St Nicholas Church

In Demre, St. Nicholas Church holds a place that is both historical and deeply symbolic, linking the Mediterranean coast of Türkiye to one of the most widely known figures in Christian tradition. This ancient East Roman church is dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra, the bishop whose life later inspired the figure of Santa Claus, and it is widely believed to have been built above his burial place. For centuries, the church drew pilgrims traveling through the region, and it continues to be one of the most important religious and cultural landmarks on the Lycian coast.

The building itself leaves a strong impression through detail and atmosphere rather than sheer size. Inside, visitors find a layered interior shaped by centuries of worship, restoration, and devotion, including the saint’s sarcophagus, which remains one of the site’s most significant features. The church was built as a memorial to St. Nicholas after his death, and later restorations, including 19th-century Russian work, added another chapter to its long history.
