Hellfire Pass

Cut through the rock of the Tenasserim Hills, Hellfire Pass is one of the most powerful and sobering sites in Kanchanaburi, remembered for the suffering endured during the construction of the Thailand-Burma Railway in the Second World War. This section of the line, also known as Konyu Cutting, became notorious for the brutal conditions under which prisoners of war and Asian laborers were forced to work. Its name came from the eerie sight of men carving through the rock by torchlight, an image that survivors said looked like a scene from hell. 

What makes Hellfire Pass so unforgettable is the contrast between its quiet natural setting and the hardship it represents. The surrounding forest is calm, yet the site carries an immense emotional weight, making it one of the most meaningful historical stops in Thailand.
