Tomb of I’timad-ud-Daulah

Tomb of I’timad-ud-Daulah

Set on the eastern bank of the Yamuna in Agra, the Tomb of I’timad-ud-Daulah is one of the finest early Mughal monuments, admired for its elegance, symmetry, and delicate craftsmanship. Often called the “Baby Taj,” it was built in the 17th century as the mausoleum of Mirza Ghiyas Beg, a powerful Mughal nobleman and the father of Empress Nur Jahan. The tomb is widely regarded as an important step in the evolution of Mughal architecture, anticipating features later perfected in the Taj Mahal.

There is also a quietness to the site that makes it especially memorable. Compared with Agra’s larger monuments, the experience here feels more intimate, allowing the detail of the workmanship and the harmony of the design to come forward more clearly. As part of Agra’s rich Mughal heritage, the Tomb of I’timad-ud-Daulah remains one of the city’s most rewarding sights for architecture, history, and understated beauty.
