Wolji Pond

Wolji Pond is one of Gyeongju’s most beautiful historic sights, where still water, restored pavilions, and the legacy of the Silla Kingdom come together in a setting of remarkable elegance. Created in 674 during the reign of King Munmu, the artificial pond formed part of the royal palace grounds and was used for banquets and important court occasions. Today, it remains one of the most atmospheric places in the ancient capital, especially as the light begins to soften toward evening. The beauty of Wolji lies in its composition. Three small islands, stone-edged water, and reconstructed pavilions create a scene that feels balanced and serene, while the surrounding palace remains add historical depth to the experience. The pond was once known as Anapji, and excavations here uncovered tens of thousands of artifacts, revealing details of royal life in Unified Silla.
