Gwon Geum Seong Fortress

Gwon Geum Seong Fortress

High above Seoraksan National Park, Gwongeumseong Fortress combines mountain scenery, rocky cliffs, and traces of Korea’s past in one of the most dramatic viewpoints in the region. Perched around 800 metres above sea level, the site is reached by trail or cable car and is remembered as a stone fortress from the Goryeo period, though today it is the setting as much as the ruins that leaves the strongest impression. The approach is part of the experience. From the cable car station, the final walk leads over rocky ground toward the fortress area, where remnants of walls and open stone surfaces appear against a backdrop of jagged peaks. The views from here are especially memorable, opening out across Seoraksan, Ulsanbawi, Sokcho, and even the East Sea on clear days.
